EAST AND WEST

Eastern and Western cultures are coming closer together ever so rapidly nowadays.
They seem to be meeting at a junction, where elements from both sides mix, combine, intertwine.
They fill each other with new social and cultural meanings.
Beyond East, Beyond West.

Oltre l’Oriente, Oltre l’Occidente.

EUROPE: THE CRADLE OF DESIGN AS WE KNOW IT

Industrial Design is a 20th century phenomenon.
We tend to consider Peter Behrens, a German architect, to be the very first industrial Designer in the history of Design.
He was very much influenced by the 19th century Design scene, by William Morris and by the Arts and Crafts movement.

Starting 1907, year the Deutscher Werkbund (where Behrens was one of the leading membres) was founded, the architect started working with AEG as the art consultant for the Company.
His body of work included industrial buildings as well as electrical appliances, and it was so great it was able to determine AEG’s Corporate identity as well as to shape its packaging and advertising style.

Later, Modernism would prove to be the most far reaching Design revolution of the 20th century. The Bauhaus (1919-1933), the first Design School, will be one of the most memorable expressions of this style, and guided by its founder, young revolutionary architect Walter Gropius (1833-1969), will work within an innovative artistic view that mixed classical European-based concepts to the traditions supported by the Arts and Crafts movement.

ABOUT ITALY…

Italy has been the home of many of the most influential European cultures and people, such as the Etruscans and the Romans.
Rome, its capital city, was for centuries the political and cultural centre of the western civilization, as the capital of the Roman Empire.
Later, Italy would become the birthplace of Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement which will shape European thinking from then on.

SULL’ITALIA …

ITALIAN DESIGN

Aulenti, Castiglioni, Magistretti, are only a few names among those of all the Italian masters of Design.
Italian designers throughout the 50s and 60s excelled, bringing work expertise to new levels, laying the foundations for a new generation of creative minds to come – on a global scale.

Today’s scenario is extremely varied and dynamic: excellent training plans are available throughout the Italian territory and museums, events, exhibitions and shows regularly provide the best view on the modern Design industry as well as on its history and roots.

Fluid yet complex, perfected down to the tiniest detail, suggestive, filled with meaning and emotional value, Italians do great and provide wonderful examples of “emotional design”, all while producing high quality, functional, rational pieces that are modern and well aware of the needs of the present moment.
The research that is carried out to create such pieces, which reflects on the choice of the perfect materials and colours too, is visible in the examples of “convivial design” (name coined by Aldo Cibic), which are so many and so beautifully executed by Italian Designers.

Italian design keeps getting bigger and better, with young names being discovered by many companies who are able to scout for new, exciting and talented names among all of the passionate Italian professionals.

DESIGN ITALIANO
